VALUING OUR PAST – A MUSEUM FOR ALL OUR SCHOOLCHILDREN

I’ve always been a big fan of museums, and working in the Caribbean hasn’t changed my view. The Museum of Slavery in Nassau presents a detailed, and disturbing, account of the impact of slavery in the Bahamas, and museums in St Kitts and Nevis portray a fascinating picture of life before independence. Nelson’s Dockyard in […]

MARKING INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS DAY ON RADIO IN THE CARIBBEAN

Congratulations to the TCI Human Rights Commission, and it’s director Doreen Quelch-Missick, on arranging a stimulating morning’s conversation on Radio Turks and Caicos on Thursday, 10 December, to mark International Human Rights Day. With guests from government, opposition and civil society the programme was a great boost to the key work of the Commission. In my […]

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A GOVERNOR AND A DIPLOMAT?

One of the questions I am most frequently asked in Turks and Caicos, and by friends in the UK, is “what is the difference between being a Governor and a Diplomat?” It’s not an easy one  to answer, but here are some of the bigger differences. Compared to most of my jobs with the Foreign […]

PROMOTING THE UK OVERSEAS TERRITORIES IN THE CARIBBEAN AND BEYOND

Question: What do you call a meeting of British Overseas Territories’ Caribbean Governors? Caribguvs…. Britguvs…..? Unlike CHOGM ( Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting), with a convenient shorthand, no acronym  seems to roll off the tongue so easily. But nonetheless the Governors of the  five Caribbean Territories – Anguilla, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Montserrat and […]

TURKS AND CAICOS VERSUS THE CARIBBEAN: THE WINNER IS…………

One of the best ways of improving a business is to take a careful look at your competitors. I was able to do just that recently, with a short visit to the Eastern Caribbean, where Jill and I saw in a few days holiday what sort of attractions St Maarten (Dutch), St Martin (French), Anguilla […]

12 STOREY NAVAL VESSEL BOOSTS TCI’S SECURITY – AND SPORTING PROWESS

A visit by a large and imposing naval vessel to most ports is a memorable sight, and the arrival of the Royal Feet Auxiliary’s “Lyme Bay” ship was no exception, dominating  Grand Turk’s skyline this month. Over 12 storeys, so nearly as high as the massive cruise ships arriving here, Lyme Bay carried over 150 […]

Celebrating Waterloo in the Caribbean

While the ceremonies to mark the 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo took place in Europe, tucked away in a corner of the Caribbean a more modest event  with some 100 participants, including the Premier of TCI and former Chief Ministers,  was held to mark another “Waterloo”. In 1815 a wealthy Bermudan salt merchant, […]

A rare visit to one of the Caribbean’s last uninhabited paradises

There can be few more idyllic and peaceful settings for breakfast than Daniel’s cafe in Middle Caicos. Fuelled with the owner’s delicious conch grits, and his warm welcome, our small expedition set off with another local, boatman Dolphus Arthur, to our destination – the Caribbean’s largest uninhabited island, East Caicos. The sheer remoteness of East […]

RAISING THE FAMILY ISLANDS’ PROFILE

There can be few more enjoyable occupations on a Saturday morning than strolling along Grand Turk’s Front Street, past some of the exquisite old buildings like the wonderfully named “Ebenezer” 7th Day Adventist Church and the 19th century home which now houses the national museum. These great reminders of Grand Turk’s history are all set […]
