Busy Week for UK Defence in Bulgaria

A busy week for UK Defence in Bulgaria this November: Remembrance events in Sofia and Plovdiv and Britain’s newest and most capable warship’s visit to Burgas. Being a non-Resident Attaché to Bulgaria, unfortunately I was unable to attend the Remembrance events but I understand that they were extremely moving and both sites were immaculately presented  – our […]

British Embassy Sofia Internship Scheme

“The Embassy has run an internship programme for the last few years. The interns bring to the Embassy a fresh perspective alongside gaining valuable work experience. They are usually tasked with one big “project” (based on their own interests) during their time with us but, also quickly become an important part of Embassy life. I […]

No One Is Above the Law

UK embassies around the world along with my Foreign Minister this week commemorate the 800 year anniversary since the sealing of Magna Carta in a tented encampment on the banks of the River Thames in 1215. Magna Carta has become a strong British brand – over the centuries it has come to stand for much […]

We Cannot Afford Not to Reform the European Union

The UK and Bulgaria are geographically at opposite ends of Europe. Our economies are different in size and structure. And our historical experiences of building democratic institutions have been poles apart. Yet, as British Foreign Minister Philip Hammond will see for himself this week, our two countries have a lot in common when it comes to […]

Reminiscences of Bulgaria

by Andrew Bache Andrew Bache hadn’t always intended to join the diplomatic service and working for the Foreign Office wasn’t his intention in his early years. But having worked for a large accountancy company, he decided that accountancy wasn’t really his calling and felt himself drawn to the work at Foreign Office. His job there eventually […]

Pirin Where I Feel Totally Allive

by James Hughes James Hughes has been living in Bulgaria for over 18 years. The Pirin Mountains are a huge expanse of pure wilderness barely touched by civilisation. Remote and wild they offer total freedom to the adventurous! Helicopter support is a dream, support full stop is pretty limited but that’s the joy, Pirin is […]

100 years ago in 1914, the British Ambassador’s Residence was completed. This iconic Sofia building, given protected status by the Bulgarian and British authorities, has witnessed the ups and downs of the relationship between the two countries, through two world wars, the communist period, and the promises and challenges of the modern era, where Bulgaria became an EU partner and NATO ally.

100 Years UK in BG serves to celebrate this milestone jubilee. Run by the British Embassy Sofia, the blog includes stories that British nationals who had experienced Bulgaria first hand have written. These are people part of the 100-year history – some settled in the country, others just lived there for a certain period of time. The common bond between all of them is that they were part of the Bulgarian community and saw and felt about it quite differently.

We would like to build a kaleidoscopic view of the British-Bulgarian relations and believe that the British nationals who have touched to Bulgaria have a lot to share.

If you are interested in participating in the 100 Years UK in BG blog please contact us at: 100yearsinbg@gmail.com. Please help us popularise the project by using the official hashtag #100UKBG.
