About Peter

I joined the Foreign Office in 1992, to work on European issues.I then studied Chinese, in London and Beijing, for two years, and after that worked in the Commercial part of the British Embassy in Beijing for another three. In 1998, I moved briefly to London, and then left the Foreign Office to work for the European Trade Commissioner, Leon Brittan, on China's entry to the WTO.In late 1999 I moved to the British representation to the EU in Brussels, to work as head of the European Parliament team. From 2003 to 2005 I ran the Foreign Office's Strategic Policy Team in London, thinking about long term issues, before becoming Political Counsellor in Islamabad,Pakistan, for two years.I moved from there to be Political Counsellor at the Embassy Beijing in January 2007, with my wife and three children.

I joined the Foreign Office because I am fascinated by politics.

I love spending time with my family, meeting different people, living in different places, reading.I will one day have more time for mountains.
