EU/Korea Free Trade Agreement

The EU and Korea managed to make sufficient progress in the last week on the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations to be able to say that we have a deal. There are always formalities to go through – and the example of the US/Korea FTA shows clearly that these are not always pure formalities – but it does look as though we’re there. Certainly at some points in the two years of negotiations it almost looked as though we had run out of steam, but the concept of an agreement between two such important trading partners always made a lot of sense. For both the EU and Korea, once it’s in force it will be the largest FTA (in terms of trade volumes) for both countries.

I haven’t seen the complete deal as yet, but bringing down tariffs in so many areas is bound to increase trade for both sides which will be good news for consumers, whether of Korean electronic goods in the EU, or European beverages in Korea. There are also a wide range of other measures designed to make it easier to trade and do business on both sides. The opportunities the agreement will offer will be a very important area of business for the Embassy in the coming months - and for all the EU Embassies in Seoul, I’m sure.

Dear Excellency Mr.Uden, thank you very much for your interesting report. To me it's really good to read that the EU and Korea managed a lasting and sufficent progress in re. of the FTA -Negotiations.Or in your words:We have a deal after 2 years. But, after reading your full article, there's maybe one key-sentence if this agreement is in force:It will be to the benefits/advantages for both sides, the EU as well as Korea.By the way:In my opinion is a strong trade or economic relationship the 1st step for a better understanding between the people of such different cultures like Korea and Europe. Yours sincerely, Ingo-Steven Wais

Dear Mr. Uden, pls. let me start my 2nd comment to the same topic by interpreting the BBC-Report "EU and South Korea in trade deal",Oct.15th.09,in re. of this now official signed trade deal which is really in force since last week and could be worth up to $28bn. I'm glad that-according to your excellent report- this long period of negotiations over years has found this significant and deserved "Happy End".I also do full agree to you that the opportunities/possibilities of this Free Trade Agreement will now make it definitive much easier for business and trade. That's why I think that it's also an extraordinary sign for the future of the Korean- People and the EU-Citizens too. By the way:Thank you very much for answering my last Q. in re. of your book "Times Past in Korea"! Best wishes, Ingo-Steven Wais
