About Sarah
Originally from Newcastle, after gaining a BA hons English and Social Studies degree, I decided to work overseas until I got a ‘real’ job back in the UK. On arrival in Corfu I immediately fell in love with the island, and have now been here for 14 years, previously employed by a Tour Operator. As I was responsible for a number of holiday resorts around the Ionian, I gained an insight into British holidaymakers and the various situations that can crop up during their time overseas. I was extremely lucky and despite being based in Corfu, had the chance to travel all over Europe. I more recently was part of the training team, which was a great opportunity to help mould the future overseas staff.
When I saw the position of vice-consul advertised I knew immediately that it was for me – I felt as if the job description suited my skills exactly. Fortunately the Embassy in Athens agreed and I took up the post in Corfu at the beginning of June after an in-depth induction period in Greece and Spain.
It has certainly been a case of being thrown in at the deep end, starting at the busiest time of year for the Consulate. There are over 500,000 British visitors to Corfu every year and an estimated 8,000 British residents. However, my customer service and management experience has come in handy. I can be dealing with local dignitaries one minute and down at the local prison the next. Speaking the language has also definitely helped, as a large part of the role is liaising with the local authorities
I am married to a Corfiot and have a 9 year old daughter. When not working, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I am passionate about reading and am currently (slowly) writing a book.
