Too Long since the last visit to Delhi

I put this right tonight when I fly to Delhi for three days in India.  I will be in Delhi for meetings, and in Mumbai for a day to show solidarity with the people of that city and to reflect on what the Mumbai attacks tell us about terrorism and the so called 'war on terror' (it is not Al Qaeda that has made India a substantial terrorist target practically every month for the last 12).

I was last in India two years ago trying (not very successfully) to argue that India should put itself at the forefront of the campaign against climate change - what with melting glaciers in the Himalayas and people moving from Bangladesh.  Two years on the government of Manmohan Singh has significant achievements to its credit but now faces a huge challenge to find a way to engage with Pakistan after attacks whose planning finds a route back to nationals of that country.

This matters a lot to Britain - for our diaspora communities of Indian and Pakistani origin, but also for the region.  It is crazy if these countries cannot find a way to try and help each other.  I will try and blog en route and in situ.

Welcome to India. I have been staying here since some time. What about the bad roads, garbage, power cuts, water problems, and above all, high prices? You might be wondering that I am creating a bad name for my own country, which is not true. I still wish the country had none of the above problems, but it still has the same. What can I do? ------------------------------------- PREM http://www.savvybusiness.com.au

Dear Mr.David, yes it is a belated visit to New Delhi taking into account of India's prominance in the changing world order equation given its phenominal growth and the enormous economic opportunites at stake for the western world. I personally felt that you had ignored India when you cancelled your trip earlier this summer. I had been persistantly knocking your doors with my proposal of "Foreign Trade and Investment Opportunites for British Investors in India in Infra-structure Sectors for around £300 billions"....really worth serious consideration of a guaranteed and sustained long term returns with higher margins. Back on Mumbai attacks, Pakistan has taken some actions due to the pressures from the US and other Western Govts but not really upto the mark. Thanks for your trip to Mumbai to express your solitude for the victims. Regards / Venkat.

On a lighter note, I hear you are spending the night in an Indian village. I hope your back survives sleeping on the 'charpoy'! I have slept on one during a previous visit to India and it was a bit hard compared to a mattress but it is good that you will be slumming it! I think it is great you are taking some time to see more of India, gaining an overall picture of that country. Whilst I acknowledge it has grown economically it still has a number of social problems that need to be addressed and it does need to play a part in climate change issues if only for its own future well being. I also hope you will re-affirm the support of the UK for India against terrorism emanating from Pakistani soil.

i am goan.i am worried that a number of britons who bought properties in india arenow being told that the deals are illegal and so stand to loose a lifetime of savings invested in beach houses in goa it is a shame that one one speaks of anglo-indian ties when such things still take place

Respected Sir, Recently you made a comment on NDTV India during your India visit that perosn behind the MUmbai attack should be trialed in Pakistan and there is no need to hand over those to India. Now my question is "Will you say the same thing if it would had happend in UK?" There shouldn't be any double standard. You send people to America for trial. Why??? Thanks

Dear Mr Milliband, I was in a APPG for Tamils meeting attended by some of your collegaues from the Labour Party. They were all of the view that Britain should convey a message to the Indian Prime Minister and New Delhi to respect the request of 60 million Tamils of Tamil Nadu and their Chief Minister and to the call for and implement an immediate ceasefire in Sri Lanka. The 350 000 Tamils caught up in the tiny area in the north of Sri Lanka are in a precarious situation facing night and day of indiscriminate shelling and aerial bombardment. Please do your utmost to convey a strong message from the very concerned British Tamil community.

The photos of your visit to India in the FCO website are quite revealing. Would love to see similar photos of your visit to rural and "non-official" areas in other South Asian countries visited by you, especially Pakistan and Afghanistan. As they say, such photos convey more than a thousand words! Especially if they show you interacting with women and children sitting on the ground in communal harmony! The targets of terrorism could not have asked to be put in better context - imagine similar women and children, including of the Muslim faith, who died in Mumbai at the hands of ruthless terrorists. Would addressing political issues resolve such mindless terrorism, or would success on issues of socio economic development, including free trade and investment advocate this to all in South Asia, especially Pakistan not be a better option to overcome the 75 of terror threats to Britain?

David, I think u guys should sit back at ur home and sort out ur economic mess. Thanks a million for informing us that the killing of the foreign nationals and jews along with Indians in Mumbai is becoz people in Pakistan wanted to express their solidarity with the people in Jammu & Kashmir. This basically proves the fact that you guys should be taught more of history and diplomacy before you are given a chance to leave your country.

thank you so much sir for recognizing Pakistan's efforts. you honestly gave hope to millions of people. Pakistan has been the worst target for terrorism itself with bomb blasts happening all the time. And our jawaans have been dying fighting the taliban on the afghan border. thank you so much for voicing your concerns regarding kashmir and getting to the bottom of the problem. thank you so much. Pakistan Zindabad!
