The First EU-Pakistan Summit

Today's first ever EU-Pakistan Summit recognises the critical importance of a stable, prosperous and democratic Pakistan to the member states of the European Union.

The Summit establishes a long-term strategic partnership to tackle issues like violent extremism, security, and democratic governance - issues of importance to every EU member state, including the UK.

It is vital that the international community supports Pakistan's fight against terrorism and militancy. The EU has demonstrated its commitment to the people of Pakistan, not least through the huge increase in EU humanitarian aid funding.  A package of 124m euros will help address the crisis and assist those affected by the fighting in the North West Frontier Province.

The EU and Pakistan have also agreed to an enhanced trade dialogue, which we hope will lead to a full Free Trade Agreement. As President Zardari has emphasised, this should bring real economic benefits to Pakistan.

Dear Mr.Miliband, I admire your futuristic vision viz a viz Pakistan and especially Kashmir. This is what the undersecretary of state had to say very recently in Delhi: Quote from Times of India "US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs William Burns – on a three-day visit to India – stunned reporters by saying that the Kashmir issue had to be settled in line with the aspirations of Kashmiris. “It remains our view that a resolution of that issue has to take into account wishes of the Kashmiri people,” he said." Amazing......n the Indians aren't pointing any fingers towards the Americans like they did against u a few months ago. Regards and keep up with the good work. Ejaz Rabudi

Amazing that your moderator allows someone called Rabudi to hallucinate on your blog! Where is the reference to Kashmir? You only mentioned NWFP, which is not Kashmir. EU assistance to Pakistan needs a monitoring mechanism to prevent what happened to US aid see the US GAO Report at http://www.gao.gov/products/GAO-08-622.

@ mike, u need to have a deep intellectual knowledge of that particular area in order to understand how Kashmir is linked to both Afghanistan and Pakistan. and before u start hallucinating again......remember this, u can take out the militants in Pakistan by at least three-fourths if u solve the Kashmir problem......and if your iq is even above 40 u will understand what I mean. I am a Kashmiri from Indian occupied Kashmir and have faced the problem first-hand, some of my relatives have been mercilessly killed in cold blood by the Indian security forces and the renegades working under them. So, I ain't HALLUCINATING bro.
