Tackling Terrorism

President Obama's interview on  Al Arabiya  sets out in clear terms the foundation of his Administration's approach to the Muslim world(s).

The watchwords are clear: respect for difference, smart use of power, building a coalition  for  social change. The Prime Minister and I have made similar arguments.  Roger Cohen's article in the New  York  Times on Thursday  provides good context

I think more could be done in regards to the current diffrences...we should be trying to understand the sutuation better... the same time the muslim world should not impose tehir rules in our day to day live..as we may not necessary agree. we have aknowledge that diffrences beetween the religious groups will always exist and we have to get on with it!

I think Obama's administration is a welcome change from the obscene policies of the Bush years which, I hate to add, were often promoted and backed by people such as yourself David. I am pleased the conflict in The Middle East is one of Barack Obama's top priorities - unlike previous administrations who have tended to leave it to the dying days of their presidencies to bother to focus on it. Tony Blair is right when he says that finding a solution to the Israel-Palestine problem will help heal much of the tension in the world, particularly between the Muslim and Christian divide. I have great hope that Barack and Hillary will help find a resolution to this conflict and I hope Israel will show learn to adopt a few morals. I also hope that Gordon Brown and yourself will continue to play a role in finding a solution. Gordon demonstrated his diplomatic abilities well in bringing the crisis in Kenya to a conclusion. Let's hope he uses the same techniques with Israel and Palestine.

UK’s responsibility to the world is larger than realized. In the current global context, UK and the US are in the world than any other country and hold a great responsibility to give some regulations to the anarchic international system. This should be done by strengthening current international institutions or any other diplomatic or military means. But in this sensitive job it is very important to keep credibility and accountability of the acts of these two countries. This is somewhat deteriorated in the US side under Bush administration. But, apparently President Obama is serious about re-gaining necessary credibility to the US interactions in the world. Tackling terrorism should be found on the top of accepted democratic norms then the international community will always be in the side of winners.
