Iceland and the EU

Last week I spoke to Ossur Skarphedinsson, the Foreign Minister of Iceland, to congratulate him on his country's decision to apply to join the EU. I said that the UK was a strong supporter of this application and wanted to see Iceland as a full member as soon as possible. Iceland is of course a small European country with deep democratic roots but which has been hit hard by the global financial and economic crisis. The application is a vote of confidence that the prospect of joining the EU can help them emerge more quickly from the crisis.

They must need their heads tested. Still, before long they will be another Eurosceptic country - and one not inclined to support France or Germany - so hopefully their MEPs will join the Tories' anti-Federal grouping.

Dear David, I think that's it's a good sign for the European future that you were the 1st Foreign Minister to congratulate the Foreign Minister Ossur Skarphedin of Iceland to apply to join the EU. To me, it's good to read in your interesting report, that the UK was already a strong supporter and wanted to see this small but very democratic country as full member. It's of course a vote of confidence with all the prospect of joining the EU. And maybe therefore a signal for Norway or Switzerland. Best wishes, Ingo-Steven Wais
