East as well as south

I am in Prague for the launch summit of the EU's Eastern Partnership. This is intended to deliver practical benefits to the EU and to its neighbouring six countries to the east. There is money and political muscle behind it.

It was humbling to hear the president of Azerbaijan (biggest investor; the UK) describe the summit as the most important day since independence. The partnership is about building links and capacity. It is not anti-Russian; it is about mutual benefit and mutual responsibility.

But it will take active diplomacy: the unresolved conflicts in Nagorno-Karabakh and Transnistria point to the enduring problems

Dear Mr Milliband I welcome the news of the agreement to improve relationships within the Eastern Partnership countries. Concordia has worked very closely with them under SAWS for a number of years and I believe it is easily within the UK government's power to assist these countries achieve an improved standard of living by offering training and investment. With cooperation from both sides at government level it needn't become an Immigration issue but a well managed project which will enable them greater self sufficiency and independence. Yours sincerely, Christine Lumb
