Kamal Gherbawi, one of our two Palestinian staff in Gaza, has been in London for a training course. Sounds simple. But it's not. The last time Kamal and his colleague, Kamal Kalloub, managed to get out of Gaza was two years ago. Their families have never been out. Last week we were at last able to arrange temporary passes for all of them, an inadequate token of thanks for the amazing job they do. Since 2005 the Kamals have helped us resolve the kidnappings of both Alan Johnson and the Burton family and the evacuation of British citizens under fire, ensured Gazan students can make it to British universities, helped NGOs gain access and generally maintained the sort of links that we are going to need when Gaza at last opens up again, as it must.
