Fish Tea

The Cayman Islands have an excellent National Trust that aims to preserve both local culture and environment. Last night they re-launched a collection of tales for children called “Fish Tea” (a local fish-based soup/stew).

These entertaining tales get across messages about, for example, the importance of the mangroves for protection against hurricanes, or describe how people lived in the past – their customs and values.

The philosophy underlying this book is clearly stated: “For the Preservation of the Past and the Promise of the Future”. In other words future generations – the young people of today – need to appreciate what in Cayman’s human and natural history makes this country special in order to ensure a happy and sustainable future. I wonder if enough of the current generation of adults understand this.
