OUR VISION FOR THE NPT: PRIME MINISTER’S STATEMENT

At a major international meeting today in London on the peaceful use of nuclear energy, Gordon Brown set out the UK's vision for the future on the wider nuclear issue. In the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty this is usually referred to as the three  NPT pillars - Disarmament, Non Proliferation and the Peaceful  uses of Nuclear Energy

As Gordon Brown pointed out the nuclear question is absolutely central to the challenges we face in the 21st century. “It is about the values of this global society we are trying to build and  the foundations upon which we build our common security and a sustainable future for our planet.  In short it is about what kind of world we are and what kind of world we want to be”.

He also announced that the UK would reduce the number of missiles carried on our submarines from 16 to 12. The full text of the speech can be found on the No10 website. Comment by  the Times and BBC

There is no mention in Gordon Brown's speech of the rogue states, Israel, Pakistan, and India who have flouted world opinion, ignored the NPT and developed nuclear weapons. Surely these states are a bigger problem that Iran and should be pressurised into giving up their weapons in the way that Libya and South Africa were. To ignore them in the way that Gordon Brown suggests that his ideal future is one with the weapons states disarmed, most of the world signatories to the NPT and the rogue states threatening everyone else! I would suggest that if Islamic terrorists are to acquire a nuclear weapon it will most likely come from Pakistan.

It is indeed good to hear that Mr. Gordon Brown has announced it and at a right time. With London Summit coming up next month and the G-20 meetings I think this would be one of the hot topics of discussion and I hope that rather than asking repeatedly from Pakistan about taking strong actions agains terriorist outfits...it should ensure the actions are taken.
