The port is Benin's lifeblood

Cotonou Port by UK in Nigeria

Fascinating to go down the dual highway to Cotonou in Benin. Not nearly so many loaded trucks coming into Nigeria as when I last visited. That's a sign of the impact of the world economic downturn and the credit squeeze in Lagos. The port is Benin's lifeblood. West Africa should be a growing trading region and the challenge is to get the wheels of world commerce moving again.

Infrastructure is getting better in Benin with the new port now privatised and prospect of modernisation of the railway to the north. So it could become a key regional transport hub in time. But the daily reality for many is a small bit of 'informal' trade- a bag of rice in one direction, cheap Nigerian petrol in the other.

Dear Mr. Dewar, I do full agree to you that the port of Benin -former Dahomey-is the lifeblood of this country.Especially the area of Cotonou. It's sad to read that there are signs in re. of the current economic crisis around the world that there's also a downturn and a credit squeeze in/to Lagos. On the other side it's a good sign for the future that the infrastructure is getting better with this new port and there's at least a prospect of modernisation of the railway system. But in my opinion is the daily reality of"informal"trade between Nigeria and Benin not satisfying,no solution. To end my comment I have with all of my respect 1 suggestion:Wouldn't it be better to solve this complex problem with the assistance of the Economic Community Of Western-African States and the full support of the U.K.?Last but not least are both countries members of the ECOWAS.Best wishes,Ingo-Steven Wais
