About Dominic

I was born in 1957 in Zanzibar and continued to live the next ten years on islands in the Caribbean and Indian Ocean. At university in Oxford I studied philosophy, Latin and Greek literature and ancient history. I worked as a political consultant and journalist in the Middle East before joining the Foreign Office in 1983.

Since then, I have spent most of my time working in or on the Middle East, in Syria, Oman and Saudi Arabia, before becoming Ambassador in Iraq and then Egypt, where I arrived in December 2007. I have also worked in Washington and Argentina.

I am married to Louise, whom I met in Oman in 1987. We have two daughters, the eldest of whom was born in Muscat, and two sons: all are aged between 20 and 15. I am happiest when exploring with my family whatever country I am working in, otherwise playing tennis or cricket and being in, or beside, the sea.
