Triumphs and challenges of Communism and Cossacks

Which Ukrainian city is famous both as a Cossack stronghold and as the home of one of the Soviet Union’s biggest electrification projects? The answer is of course Zaporizhia, a city of three quarters of a million people on the banks of the Dnieper in eastern Ukraine.  Entering the city from the north you drive […]

EU help for Ukrainian borders

Last year I wrote a blog about three big seizures of cocaine in Ukraine.  So I was interested when the EU Border Assistance Mission (EUBAM) held a seminar on counter-narcotics recently for Ukrainian and Moldovan law enforcement agencies.  The seminar took place in the EUBAM HQ in Odesa and involved 18 Ukrainian participants from the […]

London 2012: counting down with prizes

What could be better than meeting famous Ukrainian Olympians Serhiy Bubka and Valeriy Borzov?  With 242 days to go until London 2012, I was delighted to welcome them, plus six winners of our Online Olympic Quiz, to the embassy on 28 November.  I won’t say too much here because you can read all about it […]

Brilliant British education #9

I always seem to be talking about education in these blogs.  That’s partly because the UKhas some of the best universities in the world as well as a schools sector which attracts people from all over the planet.  But it’s also because many educational establishments are actively and successfully promoting British education right here in […]

Rugby: building character in Ukraine

The rain is pelting down and the temperature has sunk close to zero.  On the pitch, two teams of boys and, in some cases, girls, run, dodge and tackle as they dispute possession of an oval-shaped ball, gradually becoming muddier as they do so.  It’s fast-paced, end-to-end stuff involving fitness, strategy and sophisticated tactics in […]

Looking even dafter for men’s health

A guest blog by Miles Martin, UkrTashBud, Mo-Team, British Embassy Kyiv On 1 November I wrote a guest blog, Movember: looking daft for men’s health.  The month of Movember is in full swing with Mo’Bros and Mo’Sistas around the world doing their bit to raise money and promote awareness of men’s health issues.  Here in […]

British approach to managing migration: tackling problems at source

Guest blog by Svitlana Yavorska, EU Co-ordinator, British Embassy Kyiv Last week I attended a seminar delivered by UKBA experts for their Ukrainian colleagues at the State Migration Service of Ukraine. Following a recent visit to London by the Ukrainian State Border Guard Service, this event was designed to continue UK support to Ukraine in […]

Blogging about blogging about blogging

Back in March I wrote a blog which wasn’t really a blog at all.  Instead, it was a plug for an interview I’d done about blogging, for the Ukrainian weekly “Delo” (an interview, by the way, which includes links to many of my favourite blog entries).  I was pleased to receive some positive comments on […]

UK-Ukraine Air Services Agreement

To the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to sign, alongside Foreign Minister Hryshchenko, a new Air Services Agreement between the UK and Ukraine.  This is a formal ceremony: as ambassador, I have been granted “full powers” to sign the Agreement on behalf of the UK Government, and the resultant Agreement is a legally binding international […]

Why European governments think opposition trials are flawed

I’ve referred in two recent blogs, What next for Ukraine and What next for Ukraine #2, to what needs to happen in order to move towards the signature and ratification of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement.  There has been good progress recently on negotiating the nuts and bolts of the Agreement, and hopes are rising that […]

I hope you find this blog interesting and, where appropriate, entertaining. My role in Vienna covers the relationship between Austria and the UK as well as the diverse work of the UN and other organisations; stories here will reflect that.

About me: I arrived in Vienna in August 2016 for my second posting in this wonderful city, having first served here in the mid-1980s. My previous job was as HM Consul-General and Director-General for Trade and Investment for Turkey, Central Asia and South Caucasus based in Istanbul.

Further back: I grew up in Nigeria, Exeter, Lesotho, Swaziland and Manchester before attending Cambridge University 1976-79. I worked in several government departments before joining the Foreign Office in 1983.

Keen to go to Africa and South America, I’ve had postings in Vienna (twice), Moscow, Bonn, Berlin, Kyiv and Istanbul, plus jobs in London ranging from the EU Budget to the British Overseas Territories.

2002-6 I was lucky enough to spend four years in Berlin running the house, looking after the children (born 1992 and 1994) and doing some writing and journalism.

To return to Vienna as ambassador is a privilege and a pleasure. I hope this blog reflects that.
