Government 2.0 – The challenge of Social Media in Modern Diplomacy

Earlier this year I travelled to Los Angeles for a meeting on Government 2.0 and to give my perspective on how modern diplomacy has been affected by the advent of Social media such as FaceBook, Twitterand the blogging phenomena.

All this was several weeks before the so called Arab Spring, which has only served to underline the importance of these new means of communication. The sheer power of the internet is amply illustrated by the fact that my presentation was watched live by over 4,000 people on line. I cannot easily think of any way that an ambassador could speak to such a wide audience.

The presentation is very much my own personal reflections based on my experience as a frontline diplomat, but also as someone who has been involved in IT for many years going back to my student days.

For those of you interested in these issues I have include a link to the presentation below, but be warned as a “Keynote speech” it is 50 minutes long.  You can also view my slides which are embedded below.

The Gov20 meeting was a fascinating opportunity to learn how people from across government and the media are using these new

techniques of communication. You can find out more by visiting the Gov20LA
