How bad is corruption in Turkey? (Part 2)

Back in February 2013 I wrote a blog called “How bad is corruption in Turkey?”  It noted that in the latest Transparency International Corruption Index, published in December 2012, Turkey had improved its ranking by 7 places to 54th place, putting it ahead of some EU countries. In December 2013, Transparency International produced its latest […]

The British Visa Application Centre in Istanbul – and Ankara – and five other places in Turkey

I don’t usually write blogs recommending that you immediately click on a link to go somewhere else. But my recent visit to the new British Visa Application Centre in Istanbul leads me to commend to you the blog written earlier this year by Richard Moore, the British Ambassador in Ankara. Richard’s blog is an excellent read, highlighting […]

Fantastic prizes – fully-paid trips to London for entrepreneurs

I recently wrote about our quest to find the most brilliant Turkish entrepreneurs and invite them to visit London – at our expense. It’s an incredible offer.  Round-trip tickets.  Paid accommodation and meals.  Guided tours.  Visits to venture capitalists. To be honest, we copied it from our colleagues in the British Consulate-General in New York, who have […]

How to finance imports from Britain to Turkey

Did you know that UK Export Finance (UKEF) can help you finance imports from the United Kingdom?  And that they have their own resident expert, Sinan Ozcan, right here in Turkey, responsible for project business development? UK Export Finance is the UK’s export credit agency.  It works closely with overseas buyers to help them finance […]

Turkey: Cradle of Civilisation(s)

The sculptures are exquisite.  Graceful birds and pouncing animals reminiscent of ancient Egypt are carved onto Stonehenge-sized stone monoliths. But this artwork dates from 6,000 years before the pyramids – or Stonehenge. Welcome to Göbekli Tepe, a Neolithic site about 15 km from Şanlıurfa in south-eastern Turkey. I’ve blogged before about the astonishing history and archaeology […]

Gay Pride in Istanbul: Why it matters

Between 23 and 29 June, Istanbul will be once again be the location for the biggest gay pride festival in the region. Last year more than 100,000 people were reported as participating. The European Commission’s progress report in October 2013 commended the fact that Gay Pride marches in recent years had gone ahead in Turkey without […]

Helping your business grow internationally

“The astonishing thing is that UKTI offers such a fantastic set of resources to help companies.” I’m at an export promotion event in the North of England.  The speaker is a British exporter who has been working with UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) for years.  He is keen to persuade other British businesses to do […]

Reptiles, fairies, conspiracies and cock-ups

Did US spacecraft Apollo 11 really land on the moon in July 1969?  Was the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, an accident?  Are many world leaders in fact shape-shifting reptilians? Back in August I wrote a blog called “Why Turkey can be confident”.  I set out why I was so impressed by this wonderful, welcoming country; and […]

Gravity and the Artificial Pancreas: GREAT Festival of Creativity meets Istanbul

A woman drifts terrified in space, gazing down on earth.  A factory turns out millions of computers for $25 each.  A craftsman explains why high-tech car design still starts with a sculpted clay model. We’re at “The Seed” in Emirgan, north of Istanbul.  Far below, the blue waters of the Bosphorus sparkle.  On the terrace […]

I hope you find this blog interesting and, where appropriate, entertaining. My role in Vienna covers the relationship between Austria and the UK as well as the diverse work of the UN and other organisations; stories here will reflect that.

About me: I arrived in Vienna in August 2016 for my second posting in this wonderful city, having first served here in the mid-1980s. My previous job was as HM Consul-General and Director-General for Trade and Investment for Turkey, Central Asia and South Caucasus based in Istanbul.

Further back: I grew up in Nigeria, Exeter, Lesotho, Swaziland and Manchester before attending Cambridge University 1976-79. I worked in several government departments before joining the Foreign Office in 1983.

Keen to go to Africa and South America, I’ve had postings in Vienna (twice), Moscow, Bonn, Berlin, Kyiv and Istanbul, plus jobs in London ranging from the EU Budget to the British Overseas Territories.

2002-6 I was lucky enough to spend four years in Berlin running the house, looking after the children (born 1992 and 1994) and doing some writing and journalism.

To return to Vienna as ambassador is a privilege and a pleasure. I hope this blog reflects that.
