A British city in the Brazilian countryside

Nova Lima, just outside Belo Horizonte, hosted the England World Cup Squad of 1950. They gave them such good hospitality that this highly talented group of players then lost a match against the United States, then just an amateur team I visited Nova Lima this week and had dinner at the club where the England squad trained. I saw the coffee set with the three lions they presented m- still … Read more »A British city in the Brazilian countryside

Speaking to media in Madrid today the Prime Minister David Cameron said: “Today is a truly sad day for our country. We’ve lost a great Prime Minister, a great leader, a great Briton. As our first woman Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher succeeded against all the odds, and the real thing about Margaret Thatcher is that she didn’t just lead our country, she saved our country. I believe she’ll go down … Read more »Condolences to Margaret Thatcher

Arms Trade Treaty

Yesterday was a major achievement for the United Nations. Brazil and Britain joined a total of 154 states in agreeing an Arms Trade Treaty at United Nations. Only 3 states voted against it (Iran, Syria and North Korea). I was delighted to see the prominence of reporting on the issue on Brazilian TV and in the press. For the first time, the World has a robust and legally-binding Arms Trade Treaty. This is … Read more »Arms Trade Treaty

It was fun too.

Visit to Rolls-Royce in Santa Cruz

A British company close to my heart is Rolls-Royce. They are important in the aero engines field here in Brazil. They are also key partners for Petrobras for providing engines to help extract oil. They are now moving more into shipping, including for the oil industry. Their HQ is in Derby, some 15 km from where I was born and lived for the first 18 years of my life. They … Read more »Visit to Rolls-Royce in Santa Cruz

Falkland Islands Referendum

The Falkland Islanders have chosen to remain part of Britain, using their democratic and self-determination rights. People sometimes say to me: “But self-determination doesn’t apply because you forcibly removed the Argentine population in 1833 and implanted a British one instead.” This is not the case. It’s important to understand the facts. The first published mention of a sighting of the Falkland Islands was in 1600, following the voyage of the … Read more »Falkland Islands Referendum

A guest blog by British Consul General in Rio de Janeiro, Paula Walsh. Today, March 8th, we celebrate International Women’s Day and I am glad to deliver our message, as a guest from our Ambassador, Alan Charlton.
